The satellite navigation systems currently utilised by MOD are C-Nav® receivers using satellite-delivered C-Nav® Corrections Service (CCS) and Egnos corrections. CCS is a global system for the distribution of dynamic DGNSS Precise Point Positioning corrections, giving the user the ability to position anywhere in the world with stated accuracy of better than 10 cm (4 inches).
These systems have recently been supplemented by Hemisphere® Multi-GNSS RTK, high accuracy receivers, using satellite-delivered corrections. These offer worldwide stand-alone rig positioning to 4cm, additionally they have the ability to be easily upgraded to provide heading accuracies to within 0.01⁰
The GPS systems are used in conjunction with gyrocompasses to provide accurate surface positioning wherever required and can be augmented with sector scanning sonar.
MOD owns and operates ‘Leica’ Total Stations for precise measurements. Using auto-tracking or reflectorless methods, we determine object positions relative to assets. Auto-tracking involves placing prisms on the platform, while reflectorless relies on manual tracking of platform points. Data from the Total Stations and a gyrocompass is processed using MOD’s proprietary ‘AccuRig-EDM’ software, displaying the rig’s outline, offsets, platform images, targets, and tolerance data. By configuring equipment and collecting sufficient data points, the software calculates the accurate position and certainty level, to centimetric accuracy
MOD use the Marine Electronics Limited (MEL) Scout 2 system to acoustically position jack-up rigs relative to sub-sea assets. Leg mounted transducers send and receive signals to a transponder fixed at a known point on the asset.
The Scout system, accurate to within +/- 0.5 meters, measures the distances between the transducers and the transponder on the asset. This data is processed by MOD’s proprietary ‘AccuRig-EDM’ software, which displays the rig outline, offsets, asset images, targets, and tolerance data, and using the rig’s heading calculates the accurate position and certainty level. The system is augmented by the use of sector scanning sonar devices for visualisation of the asset.
MOD have designed and developed the proprietary ‘VPOD’ Tug Management System (TMS) for the accurate positioning of anchors. This lightweight system was developed for deployment at sea and can be easily installed by the anchor handling vessel (AHV) crew. In addition to radio modem technology for data transfer, units have in-built Wi-Fi to allow for updates to be applied remotely by the MOD survey team
The system gives the crew access to the rig position, and all required background field data including platforms and subsea data.
